Designing the Future of Layer: Welcome Megan Whelen 🎨

Sep 15, 2025

2025 is already a milestone year for Layer. From audio generation, to new pricing models, prompt editing, new style training and more - we’ve added a LOT to the platform. This is all great stuff, but it presents a challenge: How do we keep all these features awesome and organized without turning the platform into UX spaghetti?

Enter Megan Whelen, our new Staff Product Designer to save the day. We couldn’t be happier to have more product design expertise on the team, not only to help keep our product development focused from a usability standpoint, but to help us better understand the game studios we work with every day - and ideally provide the best experience possible.

Blending psychology, design, and code

Megan brings a rare mix of psychology, design, and web development, giving her both the analytical depth to understand user behavior and the technical fluency to turn insights into action. In true startup fashion, Mega will be wearing multiple hats to really help us dive deep into how our platform is used.

Her path spans some seriously innovative spaces:

  • Akili - creating game-based digital health treatments

  • Mastermind Sports - VR cognitive training for athletes

  • Reputable Health - wearable-powered wellness research

  • N41 Studio - boutique interaction design agency delivering complex web platforms

Megan also ran her own design agency, producing everything from websites/landing pages to full brand identities like logos, business cards, infographics, and more - all while leading projects to modernize complex web and mobile apps.

At Layer, Megan will lead design initiatives that make our platform easier and more….obvious to use. She’s here to establish a robust user research practice and guide UI/UX improvements that help artists and teams tap into Layer’s powerful capabilities - without frustration, wasted effort, or reliance on extra tools.

Megan will not only be a guiding force for product development, but also the voice of the artist.

“AI is most powerful in the hands of artists with refined taste and a sharp intuition for what resonates with audiences. When traditional craft meets generative tools, artists can move past the grunt work and focus on developing, refining, and scaling their vision. Studios that cut roles in favor of AI will quickly fall behind those that empower their teams to harness it.” - Megan Whelen, Product Design, Layer

More about Megan

When she’s not shaping digital experiences, Megan is usually creating with watercolor or acrylics, hosting murder mystery parties, or getting outdoors - hiking, fishing, and camping on Salt Spring Island in beautiful British Columbia, Canada.

Megan’s arrival signals our continued commitment to building not just powerful AI tools, but a platform that game creators love to use. We couldn’t be more excited to see how she elevates the Layer experience for studios everywhere.

Stay tuned for more.
